Skepon – Live @ In The Face

As someone who doesn’t go around shouting (or even whispering…) about himself Skepon has long been a well kept secret in Brighton. An accomplished producer who’s written numerous tunes over the years and a fine DJ as this set demonstrates. A throbbing mix that holds back from much of our usual mutant bass inspired output and takes in more than a smidgen of the soulful end of the spectrum it’s a laudable background listening companion that’ll keep your feet tapping.

Filthy Vicars – 2000 Likes EP

A free EP celebrating 2000 likes on Facebook from bass duo Filthy Vicars, including several remixes and a couple of original tracks. They get off to a good start with Outrun, utilising samples from the popular SEGA game of the same name over a grime-esque bassline. The Breach remix is nicely catchy and closer Pass Me By (A Trolley Snatcha refix) is a seriously floorkilling edit of an already heavy tune. Definitely enough bangers in here to warrant the free download.

AC Slater – Night Moves EP

AC Slater is back once again, with a release on his own label Party Like Us Records. Opener So Sweet kicks things off with a lovely female vocal hook courtesy of Megan Thomas, though it’s the second track Go Harder that really had us hooked with that trademark AC bass, though clearly he has matured his sound of late. A great release available on Beatport among others, with the second track a free download off his Soundcloud.

The Squire Of Gothos – 25th Anniversary Special E.P

The dons of bouncey bassline return with a new 8-tracker, the 25th Anniversary Special EP and from the off you know you’re back in safe hands with rave stabs, catchy vocal samples and of course the squelchy Squire’s basslines. No subtlety, just the in your face bassline that we’ve all come to know and love from them.

Kommon & Dr Cryptic – Vulcan EP

The most recent release on Chip Butty Records sees Dr Cryptic teaming up with relative newcomer Kommon for a dark-garage meets bassline affair. These two are definitely pushing the bassline genre in new directions, with 2step beats overlaid with moody bass. For my money final track Robojim is the standout, a floorkilling 4×4 affair, with a slightly subtler sub-heavy bass giving way to a gritty midrange one midway through. Ave it!

Gammy, K-orse & Basshound – Make Em Moist EP

A solid release from the Off Me Nut camp see’s Gammy teaming up with K-Orse & Basshound for this split EP. Definitely one for fan’s of Squires, bouncy basslines with a hint of the niche sound are prevalent. Standout track is the Basshound remix of title track ‘Make Dem Ladies Moist’, with it’s tropical sounding drums and heavy hitting basslines. As usual from these guys it’s pay what you like, and worth every penny!

Excision – Shambhala 2012 Mix

Once a year, I still need a horrendously bait dose of nails dubstep, and this is where I look. I know it’s crossed over into the teen head-bopping Skrillex wannabe dolts, but still…once a year I forgive where this type of dubstep has ended up (ie on Radio 1) and enjoy some machine noises and big bass lines
